Some nights the lighting is perfect, the clients are so sweet, the kiddos are easy peasy, and these extended family sessions just give me so much JOY. This sweet family gathered from all around the pacific northwest to share a vacation and extended family session together at the beautiful Sunriver Resort. We wondered down by the Sunriver Stables where the Deschutes River makes its lazy way through the fields and found the perfect little pockets of sunset. One of my favorite things about an Extended Family Session is getting to capture the relationships between the different generations and families; the way grandma and grandpa play with their grandkids, the way little boys look up to their uncles, how grown siblings shine when they’re back together again is so so precious. Extended family sessions are definitely a bit of a new trend in the photography world but one I hope sticks around for as long as I do! Its such a unique experience to add on to any big family vacation, grandparents wedding anniversary, family reunion, or just whenever someone adds a new little babe! Its the perfect way to get those photos of people together that we often don’t prioritize in the short snippets that we get together. (speaking as the youngest of four siblings I think the only adult photos we have are at each of our weddings!)
A big question I get when a client books an extended family session is, what the heck are we all going to wear!? Its a great question because it can really make or break the feel of your session but I think the biggest mistake a client can make is over thinking this step! This family did an excellent job of choosing a key color (sage green), then accenting it with neutrals and lots of texture changes (Denim & Linen) with just one or two in a pattern. This is a perfect combo to make your session look a little bit polished but not overly coordinated. A great rule of thumb is to pass out a color scheme that you love, then give a textured choose to a few individuals. This could be velvet, denim, lace, or linen for dresses!
