I am an avid reader; like, opens a 1000 page novel and doesn’t close it until its 2 am and I’m sobbing kind of reader. I even loved textbooks in college; particularly the ones that had pretty graphics and an aesthetic layout. But then I grew up and had kiddos, a career, and launched a business; and reading took a back of the bus seat.
So, one of my goals for 2022 is to prioritize reading AND diversify what I am reading. I am a fantasy fiction girl from way back. I stood outside Barnes and Noble at Midnight waiting for the fifth harry potter book, and then read until sunrise. I absolutely love this genre; but I wanted to start mixing in books that will help me be a better person, wife, mom, business owner, and photographer. I figured that may help me rationalize making it a priority at least.
Here’s the rundown for my March 2022 Reading list. I got a little ambitious and started at least 9 books this month.. but these are the three that I actually finished so far.
1. Unqualified by Steven Furtick – Religious Self Help Genre
2021 was one of the hardest years of my life for a multitude of reasons. But one magical transition that came out of it is that I have returned to God (again). The harder this last year got the more I leaned into Jesus to help me weather the storm. I discovered the elevation church podcast with Steven Furtick, and now its my Monday morning routine every week. It had such a profound impact on my day to day life. Steven mentioned in his sermon that he’s also an author; which lead me straight to my Amazon cart. I chose the one with my favorite cover, naturally.
This book is not just inspirational; he gives tangible steps you can take in your own life and heart to break the chains that the devil has you wrapped up in and step into your God given potential. If you have ever felt imposter syndrome, or found yourself in a place in life that you felt unqualified for, this book is for you!
2. It Ends With Us – Colleen Hoover – Fiction/Novel Genre
This book; oh my gosh though, this book! This was my first Colleen Hoover book and I can confirm that I am hooked. I bought it on a whim at Target when I was traveling solo and I stayed up until 2 am CONSUMING this thing. I don’t want to give too much away; but I will say that this story gets at the heart of humanity. The impossible decisions we make. This isn’t a classic love story. This is a real world love story. Everyone can pull something from this story that resonates with them. Fair warning; there are definite domestic violence triggers in this book so if that is something you struggle with I can suggest one of Colleen’s other novels.
3. Building a Story Brand – Donald Miller – Business and Marketing Genre
2022 is the year I have decided to take my business seriously. That may sound silly; because who would have a business that they don’t take seriously, right? Let me explain. I have been working on photography as a “side hustle” for three years now. I’ve honed in on the craft and the client experience; but I have been putting off the business back end that really makes a business thrive. So, this is my first step in the right direction.
I have never read a book with more tangible steps laid out in perfect clarity before. I took more notes out of this book than any engineering textbook I have. It has completely changed the way I view marketing and has given me the tools I needed to really serve my clients well and help my business bottom line. I highly suggest if you are a creative entrepreneur or business owner!
